Where Do I Belong? | Books for Adopted Children

‘Follow Me! I Want to Show You Something…’ was written to bridge a gap in books intended for adopted children. All children, not just those that happen to be adopted, struggle with the question, “Where Do I Belong?” at some point in their lives. ‘Follow Me! I Want to Show You Something…’ is an adorable, graphically illustrated children’s book in which a little girl follows her heart to discover what makes her happy. In the end, she learns that where she is happy is right where she belongs!

About the Author:

Briana Baker is the author and owner of Struggle Shuttle, an inspiring blog for women struggling with infertility, adoption and motherhood. She is also a nationally recognized and awarded writer.

Briana lives in Cincinnati, OH with her husband, two toddler daughters, and two crazy pups.

Before she started writing, Briana got her degree in Health Sciences and worked as an Athletic Trainer as well as an Activity Coordinator for an adult day care. However, after her near decade long struggle through infertility and the adoption process, Briana felt compelled to share her story and experience in the hopes of helping other women that face the same struggles.

Feeling a need to fill a gap in children’s literature, Briana’s writing now also focuses on creating children’s books geared toward adopted children.

Thoughts from the Author:

I had so many initial anxieties about becoming an adoptive parent that continued even after the birth of my oldest daughter. Being in several social media groups for/about adoption only contributed to those worries. In these groups, I was seeing several adoptees struggling with identity/emotional issues and adoptive parents struggling with connectiveness. I was fearful.

Then my daughter said her first word…”mama”.

That one word from her little mouth directed at me relieved a lot of my anxieties. I am and will always be her parent and as so, it is my job to:

  • share and celebrate her story with her
  • teach her that being adopted just means that she has a bigger family and is loved by more amazing people
  • show her how to love and accept others
  • teach her to love and accept herself

If I can equip my daughters’ with even a shred these abilities (some of which took me until recently to acquire myself) then I will feel that I have done my job as a parent.

If you think back to your younger years, how many times have you struggled with who you are and where you belong? It’s a high number isn’t it? Were you adopted? Most likely you were not…

There are so many similar struggles that we face throughout our individual lives. That realization for me, as an adoptive parent, relieved most of my anxieties. I am discovering that I cannot worry away possible future situations/feelings/thoughts. All I can do is offer tools and education to mentally/physically/spiritually/emotionally prepare my girls for anything life throws at them.

And all this is the purpose of me writing my first children’s book, ‘Follow Me! I Want to Show You Something…”.

Summary of ‘Follow Me!’:

‘Follow Me!’ is a story of a little girl that asks herself this same question. Little Mary feels unsure as to where she belongs in the world. Then, her heart takes her on a journey to discover what makes her the most happy. In the end, she discovers that following her heart will lead her to happiness. And where she is happy, is right where she belongs!
