6 Months | Baby Milestones & 10 Best Baby Products

A lot is changing when your baby turns 6 months old! Your baby is now entering into the “crawler” stage. Up until this point, everything has pretty much been the same since birth. However, now you are starting to see some drastic changes in your baby. Because of all these milestones your baby is hitting at this time, they also require different products to keep up with their ever-changing bodies and minds! But with all the products that are out there and advertised as “the best”, how do you know which ones ACTUALLY work? It’s a struggle! As a mom of two (2.5 years and 6 months) and a prior daycare coordinator, these are the best baby products that I swear by for my 6 months old baby!

Baby Milestones at 6 Months

Like I said, a lot is changing at 6 months old! You will probably start to notice things such as:- Starting/mastering rolling over in both directions.

  • Tucking knees underneath themselves/ rocking/ crawling (usually backwards).
  • Teething symptoms: drooling, sucking, fever, cranky, putting everything in their mouths.
  • Responds to their name.
  • Likes to look at themselves in the mirror.
  • Hand-eye coordination improving/ grabbing/ reaching/ bringing things to their mouth.
  • Playing with smaller toys/passing them from hand to hand.
  •  Baby sits unsupported for short amounts of time.
  • Holding weight on their feet/bouncing when held upright.
  • Making “m” or “b” sounds.
  • Eating changes.

What should I feed my six month old baby?

At 6 months old, your baby is ready to start eating regular foods! This is such an exciting little time! It’s so fun to watch them as they explore new foods, flavors and textures!

According to our pediatricians, at 6 months, normal babies can start eating one of two ways:

1. Work their way up by starting with Stage1/2 foods. (i.e. baby food)

2. Start with “soft foods”. This means foods that are easily mailable, not crunchy or hard. This method may cause some gagging, but that is normal as it is just their gag reflex at work protecting their airway.

With either method it is now suggested to start incorporating peanut butter as soon as 6 months. Studies have shown that waiting has led to the rise in peanut allergies. However, it is still suggested to wait till at least one-year-old to introduce honey. DO NOT GIVE YOUR 6 MONTH OLD BABY HONEY!

#1 Baby Food Feeder

These things are a life changer! I do love to feed my baby by spoon, but it can be a struggle to find the time to sit there for the half hour that it takes! I love that this product allows her to work on her hand-eye coordination while she is feeding herself! I also love that I can put soft foods inside of it that she has to mash up to get out. It gives me a piece of mind that she is less likely to choke when eating this way.

This particular set also comes with a one-handed baby feeder. Love how mess-free this product can make meal time!

#2 Teething Mittens

Waiting for that first tiny tooth is so exciting but also painful for you and baby! These are my number one teething tool pick for so many reasons! I love that they attach to their hands so that baby isn’t constantly dropping it. It is also not kept cold. (My babies both have sensitive skin and the cold teething rings effect them more than others.) The texture really seems to soothe their itchy gums.

Also, my 6 months old baby has Brachycephaly and right neck tightness. Her physical therapist suggested trying to get her to use her left hand more. It was SO easy to do with these mittens! I simply put one on her left hand only! She just “graduated” from PT this week!

#3 Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo

This activity center does it all! My baby loves to bounce around in this seat as she watches her older sister play and run. At 6 months old, babies are starting to want to do it all but they just can’t yet! Giving them some autonomy by allowing them to stand, jump, turn around and watch everything going on in their world without being held by you is a big deal! Also, with all the activities on this activity center, they are constantly entertained! There are sensory and fine motor activities, toys out of eye level that have them reaching and pulling, core and leg strength activities as it is a jumper and spins!

Moms love it too because not only does it free you up to get other things done, but you know that your baby is safe and learning while you do!

#4 Soft Zone Mirror Cube

Your baby is starting to recognize their name and face at 6 months old. And boy do they like to look at it! This sensory cube allows them to roll around it and see themselves in the mirrors on each side! Great for tummy time and also encourages/facilitates pulling up/supported standing.

#5 Taf Toys Toe Time Infant Car Seat Toy

Love this toy for car rides! At 6 months old, your baby is probably not sleeping every car ride anymore like they used to. Make car time a fun play time for them and allow them to look at themselves while they reach, kick and pull on the attached toys!

#6 Skip Hop Explore & More Follow-Me Bee 3-Stage Developmental Learning Crawl Toy

This little thing is so fun! It rolls around and sings while the bee is in it. If bee is removed it goes in circles until returned. It’s so fun for baby to watch and encourages them to try to crawl towards it!

Note for moms: It’s also not as annoying sounding as most toys like this 🙂

#7 CUTE STONE Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker,2 in 1 Baby Walker, Kids Early Educational Activity Center, Multifunctional Removable Play Panel, Baby Music Learning Toy

This versatile toy does it all! There are so many options and activities with this combination toy that make it a definite MUST BUY! The problem with a lot of toys for kids is that they are only used for a short amount of time as baby milestones go quickly and they grow out of them. However, this toy grows with them! Your baby will definitely get your money’s worth out of this one!

#8 Convertible Walker

Walkers are the best for giving babies independence! There is so much that they want to do and explore at 6 months that they just aren’t able to. However, a walker gives them the opportunity to explore their world independently of you! Watch their face light up as they learn to push and move themselves around! Also, these particular walkers convert so that as your child learns and grows they are still able to use it until they are walking completely independently!

#9 Silicone Bibs

LOVE THESE THINGS! Meal time is MESSY at this stage and these silicone bibs are life savers! They catch all the food that falls or rolls down their chin and then are so easy to wipe of and clean! Forget endless loads of laundry with bibs sticking to everything! (MOM TIP: If still using regular cloth bibs for drool, eliminate the risk of ruining clothes in the wash with bibs with a mesh bag!)

BONUS: Babies love to chew on these while they wait in the high chair for food/you to be ready! Anything to chew on while they wait for that first tiny tooth 🙂

#10 Baby Animal Snuggler Blanket

Both of my girls have a “wubby”. They like to rub on them as they fall asleep. A wubby can help to replace the need for soothing from a pacifier or bottle. It is also great for attachment and security for your baby.
